Turn off the TV and tune into summer sports!

The long stretch of summer holidays can be a real headache for some parents whose children spend hours playing computer games and watching DVDs. However, young people in the village of Grindleford, Derbyshire, are choosing to abandon their place in front of the TV screen in favour of getting involved in the Active Grindleford Programme.

Young people aged between 5 and 14 are invited to raise their adrenalin levels, get fit and have some fun with a range of exciting and challenging sports, from kwik cricket to football, tennis and rounders.

The programme has been set up as part of the Active Grindleford initiative, which kicked off last year with the launch of a stunning new flood-lit games area and includes weekly sessions on Tuesdays from 10.00am -12.30.

Developed to encourage young people to try their hand at new sports and have some fun at the same time, the programme is co-ordinated by newly appointed sports development officer, Paul Whitworth alongside volunteers from the project.

Commenting on the activities Paul said: "The young people have really been getting into the different sports on offer. The programme isn't just about getting active, it's also about building confidence through sport, meeting people and having fun."

The sessions are free to members and there is a £3 charge to non-members.
